The 2024 Emmy Awards Ceremony Crowns Succession as the Big Winner
The 75th annual Emmy Awards took place last night, celebrating the best in television from the past year. As expected, HBO’s hit drama “Succession” took home the crown with numerous big wins.
Going into the evening with 25 nominations, “Succession” won Outstanding Drama Series for the second time. The show also captured the Lead Actor in a Drama for Jeremy Strong’s powerful performance as Kendall Roy. In the supporting categories, Matthew Macfadyen and J. Smith-Cameron took home awards for their portrayals of Tom and Gerri.
“Succession’s” creator Jesse Armstrong accepted the award for Outstanding Drama Series with the typical wry humor fans have come to expect. “We’re all incredibly thrilled those weeks spent in Hungary paid off,” he joked, referring to the show’s long production schedule on season three.
Other big night winners included “Abbott Elementary” for Outstanding Comedy and wins for stars Sheryl Lee Ralph and Tyler James Williams. Zendaya made history as the first Black woman to win Lead Actress in a Drama twice for her work on “Euphoria.”
The Emmys Deliver a Diverse Array of Talent
This year’s ceremony showcased the incredible range of diverse talent currently producing groundbreaking television. We saw big wins for the Korean drama “Squid Game,” the Latina family comedy “Abbott Elementary,” and transgender coming-of-age series “Pose.”
Several Emmy winners used their acceptance speeches to champion important social issues like inequality, gun safety reform, and women’s rights. The politically charged speeches showed television’s continuing ability to shape cultural conversations.
Fashion Makes a Splash on the Red Carpet
In addition to celebrating outstanding achievements in television, the Emmys gave us plenty of iconic fashion moments on the red carpet. Zendaya stunned in a classic black strapless ball gown from Valentino’s recent fall collection.
“Euphoria” costars Hunter Schaefer and Maude Apatow also drew attention in whimsical looks that tapped into current style trends. “Succession” actress J. Smith-Cameron brought her character Geri’s savvy style to the red carpet, while Matt Smith kept things interesting in an all-white custom suit.
After a Long Hiatus, The Emmys Return in Full Force
This year’s Emmy Awards marked a celebratory return to normalcy after a few iterative years due to the pandemic. It’s been three long years since television’s top stars gathered to celebrate the year’s achievements in person.
Networks pulled out all the stops to make it a memorable comeback event. Showrunners and casts relished the chance to reunite on the industry's biggest night. As award season kicks into high gear, the Emmys set the tone for a vibrant year of entertainment and celebrity fanfare ahead.
We saw laughter, tears, and stirring speeches throughout the evening. After years of virtual events and quarantine productions, the Emmys reminded us of the emotional power of creative storytelling.
